Histrionic

Emotional expressiveness and need for response

The Star of the Show

All the world's a stage, and I demand the lead role.

This style manages anxiety through emotional expression and contact with people. Feelings come quickly and strongly, warmth and liveliness come easily, and being overlooked or powerless is especially hard to bear. McWilliams also uses the older clinical term "hysterical" for it. In everyday English that word has become an insult, so it is not used here.

These are patterns often described for this style in general. They are not statements about you.

Characteristic feelings
Anxiety, shame, and emotions that change quickly.
Inner conflict
Wanting attention and closeness versus fearing real intimacy.
Core fear
Being overlooked, rejected or powerless.
Ways of coping
Pushing unwelcome thoughts out of awareness (repression). Relying on charm. Expressing a feeling outwardly instead of thinking it through.
Sources of self-esteem
Being noticed, liked and wanted.
How others often experience it
Others often feel a lift of energy, fun and flirtation at first, and sometimes tiredness from the intensity later.
Strengths
Warmth, emotional attunement, playfulness, and the ability to bring a group to life.
Where it gets in the way
Feeling invisible when things are quiet. Deciding on impulse. Small things get dramatized. Being alone is hard.
Work that often feels comfortable
Often comfortable where expressiveness is an asset: acting, PR, organizing events, teaching and work with children.
What can happen under prolonged stress
Under prolonged stress: feeling lost when attention fades, for example when looks, role or audience change.
In relationships
Often drawn to steady, structured partners who offer calm, or to exciting ones who offer drive. It works when they are taken seriously, not only enjoyed.
Fictional characters with similar traits
Scarlett O'Hara, Harley Quinn, Ruby Rhod.
